Introduction :
Finishes
with lime products can be distinguished in two categories : namely lime paints
and marble finishes.
Lime
paints have many applications : as simple white lime wash, as painting on inside
and outside walls, and especially as a decorative finish with frescos as the
absolute top of art. Mainly marble
finishes appeal to one’s imagination. This
decoration has a very aesthetic splendour by using special scouring techniques
to obtain a brilliant surface, rich in luminous shading.
History of lime
paints and marble finishes:
The
first-know applications of lime paint, are the decorations in 7th century B.C.
houses in Delos and Thera. During
the Greek and Roman period, the fresco technique was developed with lime paints.
Lime
paints became more popular, reaching a peak in the 14th century with the frescos
of Giotto, and during the Renaissance period, with the famous painters Raphael
and Michel Angelo.
Different
variants on lime paints were developed ,like lime casein paints and lime loam
paints. These products improved the
qualities of the lime paints, or gave a different nuance to the finished entity.
The
addition of marble powder, vegetal additives and natural pigments, lead to the
invention and application of marble finishes.
These decorations originated in antique times, with examples in Roman
villas, and reached a top during the Renaissance and Baroque period, especially
in the vicinity of Venice. Numerous
Venetian palaces are decorated with the famous “stucco Venetiano”.
